ABOUT ACCOUNTABILITY UNIT

We seek to procuring the equal and non-discriminatory promotion, protection, and enforcement of international law where it relates to sex and/or socially constructed gender roles.

Women, men, girls and boys can all suffer gender based harm or violations in conflict situations due solely to their sex and/or gender. We are concerned predominantly, but not exclusively, with women and girls given: the disproportionate effect gender based harm, both in terms of incidence and impact, has on them in conflict situations; and the relatively low access to justice and to decision making processes they have concerning peace and security issues.

Our approach is holistic so that we situate activities related to obtaining individual redress for victims of human rights violations within broader advocacy frameworks to facilitate long-term harmonisation of state practice with adopted international legal norms.

Accountability Unit's Constitution was adopted in 2016.
